A Perfect Day of Water Activities at Marina San Miguel

Published: January 4, 2026 | 10 min read

A Perfect Day (or Week) of Water Activities

Some places invite you to slow down. Others invite you to live fully from sunrise to sunset.

Marina San Miguel de Abona, in the south of Tenerife, is one of those rare places where a single intensive day of water activities can easily stretch into a full week of adventure β€” simply because everything is so close, accessible, and naturally beautiful.

The sports marina enjoys a privileged location in a protected coastal area where the climate encourages year-round sailing and water sports. Nestled between two golf courses and connected by a scenic coastal promenade, the marina is located just 300 meters from Tenerife Sport Retreat β€” an easy walk to the left along the ocean.

Morning Ritual: Sunrise Run & Breakfast

My day starts early. At 6:00 AM, while most of the island is still asleep, I head out for my usual 10 km sunrise run. The air is fresh, the ocean calm, and the first light paints the marina and surrounding golf courses in soft gold.

After the run, I return home, enjoy a relaxed breakfast, and wake up the rest of the group β€” guys and girls ready for a full day of exploration. Today's plan: the ocean.

Coastal Exploration & Amarilla Bay Natural Park

We head toward Amarilla Bay, a protected coastal natural park and one of the most beautiful marine habitats in southern Tenerife.

This is not about speed or adrenaline. It's about respecting the ocean, observing life, and being present.

Marine life you can encounter

While snorkeling and free diving, we often see:

There is no fishing, no speargun hunting β€” only exploration, photography, and quiet appreciation of marine life.

Ocean Kayaking from the Marina

Today we choose ocean kayaking to explore the coastline. The kayaks are stored in the sports garage of the property, so it's easy:

We paddle to the right of the marina, heading toward Amarilla Bay β€” calm waters, volcanic coastline, and incredible visibility.

Kayak setup & safety

Kayaking here feels more like floating through a marine reserve than exercising.

Safety & Respect for the Ocean 🌊

Before any water activity, we always:

The ocean here is friendly β€” but only if you respect it.

Lunch & Relaxation at the Marina

After a long morning on the water, it's time to slow down. One of our favorite spots is Restaurante El Mirador de la Marina, located directly in the marina mall. Perfect for fresh seafood, ocean views, and sunset light.

Afternoon Adventure Options

The beauty of Marina San Miguel is choice. Depending on your energy level, you can go calm β€” or full adrenaline.

Ocean Kayak Adventure on Tenerife's Wild South Coast

Ocean Kayak Adventure on Tenerife's Wild South Coast

This is another must-do adventure if you love the ocean, enjoy exploring, and are not afraid of the creatures living beneath the surface.

Fun fact: around 95% of marine species are harmless or completely indifferent to humans β€” and once you are floating above crystal-clear water, that knowledge becomes very comforting.

Ocean kayaking here is not a tour.
It's a true exploration β€” raw, physical, and deeply rewarding.

Kayaks Ready in the Sports Garage

Everything starts at the Sports Garage, just 200 meters from the ocean.

Walking from garage to beach with kayak

You have two ways to enter the sea:

Option 1 – Easy & Smooth

Use the kayak slide on the left side of the coastal promenade at the sailing club.

Option 2 – Wild & Direct

If you're stronger or more experienced, you can walk across volcanic rocks directly into the sea at Playa CΓ©sar, only 50 meters from the house.

Launching kayaks into the ocean

Each ocean kayak fits:

Safety Is Not Optional 🌊

Before launching, we always respect the ocean:

πŸ•— Best time to start:
7:00–10:00 AM or 8:00–11:00 AM
Morning hours are calmer and safer.

Paddling to the Right – Pure Nature

From the launch point, we paddle to the right, toward Amarilla Bay and the protected natural park.

This side is my favorite:

The water here is often clearer and calmer, making it ideal for:

Snorkeling, Turtles & Dolphins

Once we reach Amarilla Bay, we usually stop:

This area is known for:

Every trip feels different β€” that's the magic.

Distance & Timing – What to Expect

From the launch point to Amarilla Bay under MontaΓ±a Amarilla:

➑️ This easily becomes a 3-hour adventure,
and sometimes… a full-day mission.

Kayak route map along the coast

On good days, you come back tired, salty, happy β€” and sometimes with fish for dinner.

Fishing & Adventure (More Coming Soon 🎣)

If you're more adventurous:

There is plenty of life here β€” enough for a delicious barbecue dinner.
But that deserves its own blog post πŸ˜‰

All equipment you need (knife, rope, anchor) is available in the house.

Paddling Left – Marina & Los Abrigos

You can also paddle to the left, toward:

This side offers:

But:

Personally, I always choose the right side for nature, calm water, and exploration.

Why This Experience Is Special

This is not about speed.
It's about:

It's one of those experiences you remember long after the holiday ends.

Final Advice

Grab a paddle.
The south coast of Tenerife is waiting. πŸŒŠπŸ›Ά
